Over 1,800 killed in US-Israel-Iran war, says WHO

The WHO reports over 1,800 deaths and 12,500 injuries due to the ongoing military conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, highlighting a severe humanitarian crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that more than 1,800 individuals have lost their lives and around 12,500 others have been injured as a result of the military conflict currently unfolding between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concerns about the overwhelming strain on health systems throughout the Middle East, warning that they are on the brink of total collapse given the intensity and escalation of the conflict.

The conflict began to escalate sharply on February 28, following a significant joint strike by US and Israeli forces that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This marked a turning point in the hostilities, leading to widespread violence and significant civilian casualties. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated, with hundreds of thousands of civilians being displaced, adding to the urgency of international humanitarian aid.

The WHO's report detailed the specific toll taken on various regions, noting that Iran has reported more than 1,300 deaths and considerable injuries. Lebanon has seen at least 570 deaths, with Israel reporting 15 deaths. The staggering figures underscore the immense human cost of the conflict and the urgent call for action to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the violence and displacement.
