Return of Kerosene Amid Gas Crisis, Government Makes Big Decision
In response to rising tensions in the Middle East and challenges in commercial shipping, the Indian government has confirmed that there is no shortage of petroleum products, and has announced measures to provide kerosene and commercial gas cylinders to states.
The Indian government has taken decisive steps in light of increasing tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, India consumes about 5.5 million barrels of crude oil daily, and the supply of crude oil remains secure despite global challenges. India stands as the fourth largest refining country globally, with domestic crude oil production hitting approximately 28 percent of its requirements. The government reassures its citizens that there is no shortage of petroleum products in the country.
Sharma highlighted that about 60 percent of the LPG requirements are met through imports; however, the current supply situation remains normal. To address the potential gas crisis, the government has announced the distribution of commercial gas cylinders and 48,000 liters of kerosene to various states. Additionally, measures have been taken to increase the supply of coal, indicating a broader strategy to ensure energy security during the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
In further details provided during the press conference, Sharma indicated that rural areas would receive gas cylinders within 45 days, while urban residents are expected to have access within 25 days. This targeted approach aims to mitigate the impacts of any potential energy supply disruptions, reinforcing the government's commitment to safeguard energy availability for both urban and rural populations amidst the ongoing global tensions.
