Expensive Cars, Earnings of 300,000 Rupees in a Day... How Rich Are the Beggars of Dubai?

Dubai police arrested a gang of beggars who make hefty sums, even driving luxury cars, raising concerns about organized begging in the city.

Recently, Dubai police arrested a group of beggars involved in organized begging, who reportedly earn between 40,000 to 50,000 rupees in just a few hours. This gang operates with a recruitment system, where members, often on visitor visas from abroad, come to work for these organized groups. They are especially active during Ramadan, exploiting the spirit of charity in the region.

One of the striking details from the arrests is that one of the captured beggars owned three luxury cars, highlighting the stark contrast between his lifestyle and the traditional image of beggars. Authorities stated that such individuals typically operate in shifts and change their appearance after collecting money to blend in, further emphasizing the organized nature of this operation. The police's crackdown is part of a broader campaign against begging in the city.

Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, the director of the criminal investigation department, underscored that these arrests were made to combat professional begging, a concern that poses various social and legal implications for the community. The findings point to a sophisticated network of begging that twists the fabric of charitable intentions amongst residents and visitors in Dubai, raising questions about how such organized schemes can thrive in one of the world's wealthiest cities.
