Mother who held woman captive as a slave for 25 years jailed
Amanda Wixon has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for holding a woman captive as a slave for 25 years in her home.
Amanda Wixon, a 56-year-old mother of ten, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for subjecting a woman to 25 years of captivity and abuse in her Tewkesbury home. The victim, now in her 40s, was forced to shave her head, beaten for not completing tasks around the house, and made to survive on minimal food scraps. The inhumane living conditions described by police officers illustrated a severe lack of basic care and concern for the victim's well-being.
The abuse came to light when one of Wixon's sons tipped off the authorities, leading to the discovery of the victim's deplorable living conditions, which included a bedroom that resembled a prison cellβcomplete with filthy bedding and no light. Additionally, it emerged that Wixon had stolen more than Β£100,000 in benefits that should have gone to the victim during her prolonged captivity.
Wixon's case highlights the grave issue of modern slavery and domestic abuse occurring within families, as well as the challenges law enforcement faces in identifying and intervening in such situations. As Wixon serves two-thirds of her sentence, advocates press for greater awareness and preventive measures to protect vulnerable individuals from similar fates in the future.
