With rain, SP has record traffic in the morning

São Paulo experienced its highest traffic congestion of the year on September 12 due to heavy and persistent rain.

On September 12, São Paulo set a new record for traffic congestion in the morning, attributed to strong and relentless rainfall across the city. According to data from the CET (Traffic Engineering Company), at 8 AM, the city's roadways showed a staggering 1,059 kilometers of congestion, with the southern zone reporting the most significant bottleneck, encompassing 320 kilometers, followed closely by the western zone with 207 kilometers. This marked an increase from the previous record, set just two days earlier, which had seen 946 kilometers of roadways congested at the same hour.

The CGE (Emergency Management Center) issued a bulletin warning of continued rainy conditions throughout the day, with rains varying from moderate to heavy intensity at times. This persistent weather pattern raises serious concerns regarding potential flooding, as well as the overflowing of local streams and rivers. Moreover, the risk of landslides increases in vulnerable areas, particularly where the soil saturation levels are already high due to the ongoing precipitation.

The current rainfall is attributed to persistent humidity from the ocean affecting the coastal region of São Paulo. While heavy rains can disrupt daily life and transport, they also serve as a reminder of the area's meteorological patterns and environmental challenges, emphasizing the need for infrastructure improvements to mitigate the impact of such weather events on urban areas.
