Refugee assistance hit by attack: - It is shocking
The Norwegian Refugee Council condemned an Israeli attack that damaged their headquarters in Tyre, Lebanon, but fortunately, no staff were present during the explosion.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (Flyktninghjelpen) reported a shocking incident where their headquarters in Tyre, Lebanon was damaged in what they identify as an Israeli airstrike. Fortunately, no employees were inside the building at the time of the explosion, which led to significant destruction of windows and doors. General Secretary Jan Egeland emphasized that the organization had previously provided their coordinates to both Israel and Hezbollah through the United Nations in order to avoid such incidents.
Egeland articulated his dismay over the lack of communication and the prior warning that should have occurred given the sensitive nature of their operations. He noted that it was sheer luck that staff members were out of the building for Iftar during Ramadan when the attack occurred. Additionally, he mentioned that the adjacent building, which housed a small hospital, was completely destroyed, raising concerns over potential casualties and the impact on the local community.
While condemning the Israeli military action, Egeland also called on Hezbollah to cease its 'indiscriminate rocket attacks' into Israel, pointing out the complex and dangerous situation in the region. The incident raises important questions about the safety of humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones and the dire need for adherence to international humanitarian laws that protect non-combatants and aid workers. This attack highlights the escalating tensions and risks faced by humanitarian efforts in Lebanon amid ongoing conflicts.
