This Russian Distillery Wants to Sell Trump Vodka
A Kaluga-based distillery is aiming to sell Trump-branded vodka in Russia and has filed a petition to challenge the trademark rights held by Donald Trump's management company.
Kristall Distillery, located in the Kaluga region of Russia, is making strides to sell premium vodka and gin under the Trump brand. They are pursuing this goal as part of a legal challenge against the trademark protections granted to DTTM Operations, the official entity managing Donald Trump's trademarks in Russia. The distillery, which claims that the Trump trademark has remained unused in the country for several years, has formally petitioned Russia's intellectual property court for the termination of these trademark rights.
The company has expressed particular interest in creating a licensing agreement with DTTM Operations while simultaneously applying to register the Trump trademark themselves. Pavel Pobedkin, the owner of Kristall, emphasized that a brand as notable as Trump Vodka should not be neglected. The vodka, originally launched in 2005, had a tumultuous run, discontinued in 2011 due to poor sales, but was revived by Eric Trump last year and is currently sold in the U.S. at retail prices around $48 per bottle.
The outcome of this legal endeavor could have broader implications on brand management and trademark ownership in Russia, raising questions about the usage rights of international brands in the local market. As Kristall aims to reinvigorate the Trump Vodka brand, it highlights the complexities of international business operations amidst changing political and economic landscapes. This case also showcases how local entities can challenge multinational trademark management, drawing attention to a potentially lucrative market for foreign brands in Russia.
