The US Starts New Investigations Against Trade Partners in Hopes of Setting New Tariffs

The US has initiated new investigations into several countries over alleged unfair trade practices, potentially leading to new tariffs.

On Wednesday, the United States announced the initiation of investigations against dozens of countries, which the US claims are engaging in unfair trade practices. This move opens the door for Washington to impose new sanctions, including additional tariffs. US Trade Representative Jameson Greer stated that the Trump administration is launching separate inquiries into overproduction and the import of goods produced using forced labor.

The investigations regarding potential overproduction will affect a range of countries, including the European Union, China, Japan, India, Mexico, and several others. Some of the nations subjected to these new investigations have already established trade agreements with Washington; however, Greer emphasized that these agreements are not relevant to the inquiries in question. The focus remains on ensuring that US jobs are protected while guaranteeing fair trade practices with America’s trading partners.

Greer pointed out the necessity of safeguarding American jobs and ensuring fair trade, stating, "If we have to impose tariffs to help resolve this situation, we will do it." This statement reflects a growing concern in the US regarding foreign trade practices and their impact on the American economy, suggesting that the Trump administration is willing to take more aggressive measures in trade relationships to protect US economic interests.
