National Day Against Violence Towards Healthcare Workers: A Widespread but Often Invisible Phenomenon

Italy's National Day for education and prevention against violence towards healthcare workers highlights alarming data on the structural nature of this issue, where many health professionals, particularly women, are frequently victims of aggression.

On the occasion of the National Day for education and prevention against violence towards healthcare and socio-health workers, alarming statistics have emerged that underscore the structural nature of this problem in Italy. Healthcare professionals, particularly those in rehabilitation and prevention, increasingly fall prey to acts of aggression that are often overlooked in public discourse. These incidents range from verbal abuse to physical assaults, psychological pressure, and harassment, suggesting a deep-rooted issue within the healthcare system.

A national survey conducted by the FNO TSRM and PSTRP, the Federation representing these health professions, reveals that almost half of healthcare professionals reported experiencing at least one incident of violence in the past year. Specifically, the survey highlights that 43% of health professionals have encountered such violence, while 38.4% have experienced at least one violent episode. Notably, the findings indicate that women are particularly vulnerable, reinforcing the need for targeted interventions and increased awareness of the risks faced by female healthcare workers.

The implications of this growing trend are significant, as it not only affects the mental and physical well-being of healthcare workers but also poses concerns about the overall quality of care within the health system. This National Day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to address this ongoing violence, promote preventive measures, and ensure that healthcare environments are safe for both workers and patients alike.
