Ostravian woman fell for scammers, lost five million crowns
An elderly woman from Ostrava, Czechia, was scammed out of five million crowns under the pretense of profitable investments.
A senior citizen from Ostrava fell victim to scammers who lured her with ostensibly lucrative investment opportunities, resulting in a total loss of five million crowns. The perpetrators, allegedly working from abroad, engaged the victim through deceptive advertisements featuring well-known politicians, convincing her to invest over three million crowns last summer.
In the beginning of this year, the scammers contacted her again, claiming she had earned 250,000 crowns in cryptocurrency but needed to pay fees to convert the amount into Czech currency. Trusting their claims, the senior took out a loan of approximately two million crowns to cover these supposed fees, further deepening her financial loss.
The investigation has led to the arrest of two men who acted as couriers, collecting the money from the victim. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to pursue the main perpetrators, emphasizing the ongoing challenge of scams targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, and the need for greater awareness and protective measures against such fraud in Czech society.
