Gyeonggi-do connects disrupted land through ‘railway undergroundization’...mixed development of residential, commercial, and cultural facilities

Gyeonggi-do has unveiled plans for a comprehensive development project that involves relocating sections of above-ground railways underground and developing the surrounding areas into mixed-use spaces for residential, commercial, and cultural purposes.

On December 12, Gyeonggi-do announced its blueprint for a comprehensive development plan known as 'railway undergroundization,' which aims to transition portions of the Gyeongbu Line from above ground to underground and develop the surrounding land in a mixed-use manner. At the vision announcement ceremony held at Anyang Station, Governor Kim Dong-yeon emphasized his commitment to reclaiming usable land that has been previously inaccessible due to the railway's presence, and transforming it into vibrant community spaces. The plan not only centers on the technical aspect of moving railway lines underground but also on reimagining the area above for community development.

The initiative aims to create four types of spaces: residences, leisure areas, work environments, and connectivity hubs, as highlighted by Governor Kim. The project targets four railway lines, including the Gyeongbu Line and the Gyeongin Line, spanning a 37 km area across seven municipalities including Anyang, Gunpo, and Pyeongtaek. The first focus of this effort will be along the Ansan Line, but the governor assures that Gyeonggi-do will mobilize all its resources for the Anyang railway undergroundization as a leader in advancing this transformative urban planning effort.

Particularly in Anyang, a 7.5 km stretch from Seoksu Station to Myeonghak Station is marked for undergroundization, which is expected to generate approximately 490,000 square meters of new land. Once completed, significant transformations are anticipated: Seoksu Station will become a business center, while Gwanak Station will serve as a public administration and cultural hub. An additional 6,000 tailored housing units will also be introduced in Anyang. The provincial government has already allocated funds for the initial planning efforts of this ambitious project to ensure swift implementation as part of a larger national plan.
