The face of Koreans, overcoming countless historical hardships, is as valuable as the Mona Lisa
Artist Kwon Soon-cheol reflects on capturing the essence of the Korean face in his exhibition, showcasing the identity shaped by historical challenges.
Kwon Soon-cheol, an 82-year-old artist, is currently exhibiting his work at the Kim Jong-young Art Museum in Jongno, Seoul, through a showcase titled 'Gaze, Beyond the Form', running until the 29th of this month. He discusses the importance of live sketches, emphasizing that the vitality captured in an on-site drawing cannot be matched by later enhancements. Kwon has been active between Seoul and Paris since 1989 but started focusing on the Korean identity through portraiture during his freshman year at Seoul National University in 1964 amidst the rising sentiment for national identity following the anti-Japan treaty protests and the events of April 19, 1960 in Korea.
