Hitch over IPL opener! Will RCB's first match take place at Chinnaswamy or will the venue change?

The hosting of the IPL 2026 opener at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium remains uncertain pending final approval from the Karnataka government.

The opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 involving the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is scheduled for March 28 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, the final decision on whether the match can proceed at this venue still awaits the Karnataka government's approval. A special committee appointed by the state government is set to inspect the stadium on March 13 to determine its readiness for hosting IPL matches.

Concerns regarding the stadium’s safety and infrastructure were raised following a stampede during the victory parade for RCB after their win in IPL 2025. This incident triggered the Justice D’Cunha committee to suggest extensive safety measures that were required to be implemented. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) was given until March 15 to complete all necessary improvements to ensure the safety of spectators during IPL matches.

In the midst of these developments, former Indian fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad has been elected as the president of KSCA. His election is significant, as he has emphasized prioritizing spectator safety at the stadium, reflecting the association's commitment to addressing the concerns raised after the previous incident and ensuring a safe environment for fans during the IPL.
