A man is sentenced to probation and ordered to pay 27,500 euros for the illegal felling of a notable oak tree in Mārupe

A Riga city court has sentenced a man involved in the illegal felling of an oak tree in Mārupe to two years of probation and ordered him to compensate the state 27,500 euros.

A court in Riga has dealt a significant punishment to a man involved in the illegal logging of a protected oak tree in Mārupe. As part of the sentencing, the individual received two years of probation and was mandated to pay 27,500 euros in restitution to the state. The prosecution and the accused came to a plea agreement acknowledging the man’s guilt in this environmental crime.

The investigation revealed that the accused operated as part of a group who had prearranged to commit the crime. He obtained specific equipment related to the felling process, which included a chainsaw guide, chain, and drive sprocket, and passed these tools to other members of the group. On October 26, 2022, the accused and another accomplice strategically placed a vehicle where they could surveil the site of the oak tree, ensuring that their illegal activity could proceed without interference.

While one member confirmed that the area was clear of witnesses, the convicted individual maintained watch over the surroundings. Meanwhile, a third accomplice engaged in the actual felling, resulting in the destruction of the oak tree. This case underscores not only the legal consequences of environmental crimes but also raises awareness about the protection of natural resources in Latvia.
