Zelensky to Trump: Put more pressure on Putin, not on me
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged US President Donald Trump to intensify pressure on Vladimir Putin instead of pressuring Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire amid ongoing conflict.
In a recent exclusive interview with Politico and Welt, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed US President Donald Trump, calling for increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and less on Ukraine. Zelensky highlighted the fatigue among the Ukrainian people due to over four years of conflict but stressed that morale remains high and emphasized Ukraine’s unwillingness to concede to Russian ultimatums regarding territorial losses in the eastern regions of the country.
Zelensky further encouraged European leaders to devise a comprehensive plan to ensure long-term financial support for Ukraine, specifically calling out Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for obstructing the disbursal of a promised 90 billion euro loan from the EU. He characterized Orbán's actions as extortion, revealing the tactical complexities that Ukraine faces, not only from Russia but also from challenges posed by EU member states regarding support.
Moreover, reports indicate that Baltic and Nordic countries plan to support Ukraine with adequate funding to ensure operational stability in the first half of the year, regardless of Hungary's veto. This illustrates a commitment among certain EU nations to uphold Ukraine’s defense and recovery, paving the way for discussions about the future of EU involvement in the region amid the ongoing geopolitical tension and humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict.
