Former Commander Lee Jin-woo Charged with Perjury in Yoon Seok-yeol's Impeachment Trial
Lee Jin-woo, the former commander of the capital defense command, has been charged with perjury during the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Seok-yeol.
Lee Jin-woo, the former commander of the Capital Defense Command, has been transferred to prosecutors for allegedly committing perjury in the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Seok-yeol. On February 4 of last year, during the fifth hearing of the impeachment trial, Lee testified that he had not received any orders to obstruct members of the National Assembly from voting on the dissolution of martial law. However, he further stated that he understood the orders from former Minister of National Defense Kim Yong-hyun to go to the National Assembly as an operational command, asserting that he saw no legal or constitutional issues with it.
Following the impeachment proceedings, Lee was dismissed from his position in December and has since been a civilian. He is also facing charges related to key duties related to rebellion and is currently undergoing trial for those accusations. The ongoing legal proceedings against Lee underscore the heightened tensions and complexities surrounding the impeachment case of President Yoon, which has drawn significant public and political attention in South Korea.
The allegations of perjury imply serious repercussions not only for Lee, but potentially for the integrity of the impeachment trial itself, as it raises questions about the credibility of witness testimonies. This situation reflects the broader political landscape in South Korea where issues of accountability and governance are in the spotlight, especially concerning officials' actions during critical national crises.
