217 people indicted for illegally purchasing farmland for speculation
Authorities have indicted 219 individuals for illegally acquiring farmland in Hwaseong, South Korea, for speculative purposes without intent to farm.
In a significant crackdown on real estate speculation, a total of 219 individuals in Hwaseong, South Korea, have been indicted by local authorities for illegally acquiring farmland. This operation, conducted by the Hwaseong West Police, was part of a broader initiative targeting real estate crimes from October 17 of the previous year to March 15 of this year. The accused individuals had purchased the land not for agricultural purposes but to profit from potential land development, raising concerns regarding compliance with the Farmland Act, which prohibits non-agricultural ownership of agricultural land.
The investigation revealed that these landowners were not engaged in farming activities; instead, they aimed to benefit from prospective land development opportunities. Many of the accused illegally transferred ownership without permission or unlawfully rented the land out to others, marking significant violations of agricultural regulations. In addition, some individuals were reported for offering to elevate their land through excavation work, only to dispose of waste materials in violation of the Land Planning Act, highlighting a pattern of illegal activities associated with land ownership and management.
Authorities emphasized the importance of enforcing the Farmland Act to curb speculation and ensure that agricultural land is used appropriately. The Hwaseong West Police stated that this crackdown was a crucial step towards establishing the principle of genuine farming needs in land ownership. They pledged to continue vigorous investigations against those who unlawfully acquire land for speculative reasons, underscoring a determined stance to uphold the law and protect agricultural integrity in the region.
