Julius Oro Children's Literature Prize Awarded to Author Who Engages Young Readers

The Julius Oro Children's Literature Prize has been awarded to author Ilmar Tomusk by students of Lääne-Harju Municipality schools.

This year, the Lääne-Harju Municipality has once again awarded the Julius Oro Children's Literature Prize, with the laureate being selected by students from local schools. The award honors Ilmar Tomusk, a children’s author known for his ability to engage young readers. The prize, named after Julius Oro, a prolific children's writer and long-time teacher, was established to honor his legacy and the importance of Estonian children's literature.

Julius Oro, originally named Julius Oengo, was born in 1901 and passed away in 1941. His works have touched the lives of many generations, not only through books but also through beloved children's songs that have been adapted into music. The establishment of the award in 1999 by the former Vasalemma municipality aimed to celebrate his memory and the value of children's literature in Estonia. Previous recipients of the award include well-known authors such as Mika Keränen and Aidi Vallik, among others.

The Lääne-Harju Municipality decided to revive the award this February, presenting it every five years on the round anniversary of Julius Oro's birth. By reestablishing the prize, the municipality aims to keep Julius Oro’s legacy alive and recognize authors who provide children with genuine joy in reading. The decision reflects a commitment to fostering a love for literature among the youth in the region and ensuring the continuation of Oro's cultural influence in Estonian literature.
