Italy announces that its military base in Kurdistan, Iraq, was attacked

Italy reported that its military base in Erbil, Kurdistan, was attacked, but there were no casualties among Italian soldiers.

The Italian government announced that its military base located in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, was targeted in an attack. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the Italian troops. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned the attack on the Italian base and confirmed that all soldiers were safe and inside fortifications. The base is part of a mission to train local security forces within the framework of an international coalition led by the United States, which has been active since 2014 against jihadist groups.

A Kurdish security source indicated that international coalition air defenses had downed explosive-laden drones over Erbil the day before, but there were no reports of injuries caused by these incidents. Subsequently, the Italian Ministry of Defense reiterated that the military base was specifically targeted by a missile strike during the night but confirmed that, similar to previous reports, no casualties or injuries were sustained by the personnel stationed there.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, particularly for international forces operating in Iraq. The continuous threat of attacks emphasizes the precarious situation in Kurdistan and underlines the importance of international military cooperation to counter extremist threats. The reactions from Italian officials indicate a commitment to maintaining a presence in Iraq and a resolve to protect their personnel amid growing tensions in the region.
