Officials: The deadly fire on a bus in Switzerland was caused by a man with psychological problems
A tragic bus fire in Switzerland, which resulted in multiple fatalities, was reportedly started by a 65-year-old man suffering from psychological issues.
A devastating bus fire occurred on Tuesday evening in the small town of Kerzers, roughly 20 kilometers west of Bern, Switzerland's capital. Eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media depict towering flames and thick black smoke billowing out of the bus's windows. According to Fribourg canton prosecutor Raphaelis Bourquinas, the suspect entered the bus with two bags, doused himself in gasoline, and ignited himself, leading to the inferno. Among the deceased is the assailant himself, a 65-year-old Swiss citizen who had been experiencing psychological difficulties.
Authorities described the man as marginalized and known to the medical community due to his struggles. Bourquinas mentioned that there is no evidence to suggest that the incident was an act of terrorism. The man had been hospitalized recently for physical ailments and was reported missing by his family just a day or two prior to the tragic event, suggesting a concerning pattern of behavior leading up to the fire.
As the investigation continues, the police confirmed that all victims have been identified. The incident raises troubling questions about mental health issues in marginalized individuals and the potential dangers they pose to themselves and others, highlighting the need for better mental health support systems in the community and how they can prevent such tragedies in the future.
