Horses trapped in snow for months rescued in the mountains of Turkey

Local residents in northeastern Turkey successfully rescued three horses that had been trapped in snow for months in the Artvin region.

In a mountain village of northeastern Turkey's Artvin region, heavy snowfall has created up to a meter of snow cover, leading to the entrapment of three horses—two adults and a foal—for several months. Their owners, unable to locate the horses despite significant searching efforts, received a tip from a local resident who reported seeing hoof prints in the snow. Concerned for the animals' wellbeing, local youth decided to investigate further, utilizing drones to search the mountainous terrain.

After thorough exploration, the young rescuers spotted the horses sheltering near a small mountain hut, having survived by desperately searching for food in an area wholly blanketed by snow. A local resident named Fatih Kaja expressed the group's relief upon discovering the horses, stating that they had held onto hope that the animals were still alive. As soon as the horses were spotted, the rescuers quickly organized and equipped with snowshoes, proceeded to enact the rescue operation.

The initiative taken by the community not only highlights the bond between locals and their animals but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of both the risks posed by severe weather conditions to wildlife and the lengths to which people will go to save them, thus fostering a strong sense of community and compassion towards animals in the region.
