M. Jakubauskienė explained why she did not go to Kapčiamiestis: political tension began to rise
Lithuania's Health Minister M. Jakubauskienė opted not to attend a scheduled visit to Kapčiamiestis due to escalating political tensions.
M. Jakubauskienė, the Minister of Health in Lithuania, stated her recent decision to cancel a visit to the town of Kapčiamiestis was influenced by rising political tensions. In an interview, she mentioned that, to prevent exacerbating the situation, her team collectively agreed that it would be better for her to postpone the visit until emotions settled down. Jakubauskienė emphasized her commitment to eventually meet with the residents and address their concerns once the political climate stabilizes.
Although she did not attend, her advisor, Skirmantas Krunkaitis, and mental health advisor, Professor Neringa Grigutytė, proceeded to Kapčiamiestis to fulfill the immediate need for psychological consultations among the townsfolk. During their visit, it was reported that a mobile crisis team provided in-person support to one individual, while several residents received remote consultations. This shows a proactive approach by the health ministry to respond to the community's rising mental health needs amidst political unrest.
Jakubauskienė reassured that the mobile crisis teams remain operational and ready to assist should further needs arise. Her decision to withdraw from the visit underscores the sensitivity needed in political interactions, particularly in times of unrest, and highlights the ongoing mental health challenges faced by communities during such crises.
