Members of the European Parliament on relations with Trump: how not to fuel tensions?

Lithuanian MEP Aurelijus Veryga emphasizes the importance of maintaining pragmatic cooperation with the United States, despite tensions arising from Trump's policies.

Aurelijus Veryga, a leading member of the Farmers and Greens Union in Lithuania, underscored that the European Union must sustain pragmatic cooperation with Washington, as the United States remains an indispensable security partner for Europe. He pointed out that Europe is still considerably distant from the defense capabilities that the United States possesses, making it vital not to sever communication and to navigate the political and diplomatic landscape carefully.

In his remarks, Veryga also noted that European politicians should avoid emotionally charged rhetoric or personal attacks toward the U.S. president. He emphasized the pragmatic necessity of working with the elected leader of the U.S., irrespective of individual opinions about him. This approach is crucial as it reflects a broader understanding that engagement is necessary for mutual security and cooperation, particularly in an era of complex geopolitical tensions.

Moreover, the representatives' discussions included a recognition of the need for Europe to reassess its defense and economic competitiveness in light of the pressures from U.S. policies, particularly those under Trump's administration. While some aspects of Trump's policies may cause tensions, they might also act as a catalyst for Europe to enhance its strategic autonomy and rethink its defense strategies vis-à-vis global dynamics.
