Starto Entertainment's live event company sues ticket resale website and individual

The live event company of Starto Entertainment has sued a major ticket resale site and an individual for repeatedly profiting from unauthorized ticket resales.

Starto Entertainment's live event company, based in Tokyo, has initiated a lawsuit against a prominent ticket resale platform and an individual for profiting from unauthorized ticket resales. The lawsuit, filed on this month, targets the ticket resale site 'Ticket Distribution Center' and a Tokyo-based man, alleging repeated violations of the Ticket Misconduct Prevention Law, which prohibits selling tickets above face value without the organizer's consent. This case is said to be the first of its kind in Japan, aiming to hold resale platforms accountable for facilitating such practices.

The details of the lawsuit reveal that the Ticket Distribution Center allegedly facilitated the resale of tickets for the popular idol group 'Snow Man' at inflated prices, ranging from four to twelve times their original value, resulting in illicit fees totaling approximately 150,000 yen. The live event company is seeking compensation of about 150,000 yen from the resale platform as well as the individual, who reportedly engaged in more than 31 instances of unauthorized reselling of live event tickets since May 2023, raising concerns over the ongoing ticket scalping issue in the country.

Despite efforts by the live event company to have unauthorized listings removed from the resale site, their requests went unheeded, prompting the lawsuit. Their lawyer emphasized the necessity of holding resale sites accountable to effectively combat ticket scalping, highlighting the broader implications of this case for the entertainment industry and protective measures for fans and legitimate buyers alike.
