Anneli Sinirand, leader of the hedgehog rescue organization Siilipusa, emphasizes the need for caution during these activities, as one careless movement can lead to serious injuries or even death for these small animals. Hedgehogs, which may weigh just over 300 grams after surviving winter, are vulnerable while they emerge from hibernation, and their nests made of dried grass and leaves can easily be destroyed during cleaning efforts.

Sinirand advises that it’s safer to rake leaves and debris gently, using a dull rake instead of sharp tools, to avoid harming any hidden hedgehogs. Before moving larger piles of leaves or branches, it’s essential to shake them gently by hand to check for any hedgehogs that might be concealed within. Such precautions are necessary to ensure the safety of these animals during the critical period of their spring awakening, as careless cleaning could lead to tragic outcomes.
