Scheme for illegal sale of driver's licenses in Tocantins involved six doctors and a psychologist, police say
Brazilian police dismantled a criminal organization involved in the illegal issuance of driver's licenses, arresting six medical professionals and one psychologist.
On November 11, Brazilian police conducted a significant operation called 'Sinal Vermelho' which targeted a criminal organization suspected of fraudulently issuing National Driver's Licenses (CNH) in the state of Tocantins. The operation unveiled the involvement of six doctors and one psychologist along with public servants from the Department of Transit (Detran-TO) and driving school instructors, indicating a widespread network of corruption. Authorities executed ten preventive arrest warrants and 59 search and seizure warrants, highlighting the scale of the operation.
Candidates seeking licenses were reportedly paying up to R$ 4,300 to bypass mandatory legal steps, such as medical and psychological evaluations, theoretical lessons, or practical tests. This criminal scheme undermines the integrity of the licensing process and raises serious public safety concerns, as individuals unfit to drive were unlawfully obtaining their licenses. The police efforts emphasize a commitment to cracking down on such fraudulent activities that can jeopardize road safety.
In addition to the illegal sale of CNHs, police investigations revealed that the organization was also involved in the regularization of stolen vehicles, showcasing a broader criminal operation that extends beyond just driver's licenses. The significant arrests and the subsequent inquiries reflect ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in Brazil, particularly within the public sector where trust is essential for societal operations.
