Dias Toffoli declares himself suspicious to judge the request for installation of the CPI of Banco Master; the case reporter will be Cristiano Zanin
Supreme Minister Dias Toffoli has declared himself suspicious in the case regarding the installation of the CPI for Banco Master after his prior involvement with the case.
Supreme Court Minister Dias Toffoli has stepped aside from judging the request for the installation of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) concerning Banco Master, declaring his self-suspicion due to personal reasons. This decision comes after Deputy Rodrigo Rollemberg from the PSB party approached the Supreme Court (STF) due to a delay in the Chamber of Deputies' response to the CPI request, which had remained unanswered for over 30 days.
Toffoli had been overseeing the Banco Master case until February 12 and stated that previous suspicions regarding his impartiality were dismissed. However, he cited personal reasons as the basis for his self-recusal from the case, creating a procedural need for the STF to appoint a new reporter. The new reporter appointed is Minister Cristiano Zanin, who will now take charge of overseeing the proceedings related to the CPI.
This situation highlights the complexities within Brazil's judiciary, particularly how personal associations of judges can impact their ability to preside over significant cases. With Zanin taking over, the dynamics of the investigation into Banco Master will continue, amid ongoing discussions around accountability and the influence of banking on policymaking in Brazil.
