Cyclist dies after being hit by a car on BR-050, in Campo Alegre de Goiás

A cyclist died after being struck by a car on BR-050 in Campo Alegre de Goiás; the driver claims he couldn't avoid the collision.

A tragic accident occurred on the BR-050 highway in Campo Alegre de Goiás, Brazil, where a cyclist lost his life after being hit by a car late at night. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the driver, a 46-year-old man, reported that he attempted to maneuver and brake but was unable to avert the cyclist, who was struck around 21:45. Following the collision, the police conducted a breathalyzer test on the driver, which indicated he was not under the influence of alcohol.

The local firefighters were called to the scene but unfortunately confirmed the cyclist's death on-site. The body was subsequently taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in Catalão, situated approximately 120 kilometers from the accident site. This incident underlines ongoing concerns regarding safety for cyclists on roadways, particularly in areas with heavy vehicle traffic.

The PRF indicated that the incident will be investigated by the Civil Police to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Depending on the findings, the driver could face charges of involuntary manslaughter, acknowledging that there was no intent to kill but highlighting the severe consequences of traffic incidents on public roads.
