In an unusual incident, a male red fox managed to stow away on a cargo ship traveling from Southampton, England to New York. The fox undertook the 3,400-mile journey inside a vessel that was transporting cars, successfully eluding initial detection. After arriving in New York on February 18, customs officers found the fox and contacted various wildlife services to ensure its safe transition to a more suitable environment. The Bronx Zoo has taken responsibility for the fox amidst lively discussions regarding how the animal managed to board the ship. The ship departed Southampton on February 4 and the scene of the fox being discovered has attracted attention not only for the animal's audacity but also for the intricate coordination required among multiple wildlife protection services involving the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and others. Zookeepers estimate the fox to be about two years old and weighing 5kg. This incident has raised awareness about wildlife and human transportation intersections, prompting conversations about maritime regulations concerning animals and the safety of wildlife amid shipping operations. The Bronx Zoo staff is optimistic about the fox's adaptability and future, reflecting on how such stories contribute to understanding wildlife behavior and environmental conservation efforts.
