Edmonton team allows Alberta lung patient to receive care closer to home
Deborah Hoekstra, an Alberta lung patient, receives critical care closer to home at the Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, which highlights an essential partnership in healthcare services.
Deborah Hoekstra, a United Church minister from Alberta, faced severe health challenges when she experienced difficulty climbing stairs in 2020. Initially suspected of having COVID-19, a CT scan revealed her lungs were filled with blood clots, leading to months of hospitalization and monitoring without improvement. As her symptoms worsened, she struggled with fatigue, shortness of breath, and insomnia, drawing concern from people close to her.
In 2024, Hoekstra was ultimately referred to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute's Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, where she met Dr. Varghese. With his expertise, they diagnosed her with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH), a condition that may arise from unresolved blood clots in the lungs. This diagnosis not only provided an explanation for her lingering health issues but also opened doors to potential treatments.
The case underscores the necessity of accessible healthcare services within Alberta, allowing patients like Hoekstra to receive specialized care without traveling far from home. The collaboration among medical professionals at the clinic exemplifies how targeted health initiatives can lead to better patient outcomes, thereby improving the general health of the community.
