Four years of improvisation: Stara Vlaška is now undergoing reconstruction

The City of Zagreb has finally initiated the procurement process for the reconstruction of Stara Vlaška, a project that has seen nearly four years of delays since its designation as a pedestrian zone.

It has been almost four years since Stara Vlaška was declared a pedestrian zone, yet only now has the City of Zagreb begun the process of public procurement to select a contractor for its comprehensive renovation. Until now, the project had been largely limited to traffic closure, the installation of benches, and large concrete planters, resulting in Stara Vlaška functioning as an improvised pedestrian area without any serious urban planning interventions. The city has recently announced a competition for contractors based on a solution chosen from an architectural-urban planning contest, which received 23 submissions. The winning design was created by Studio Atmosfera.

The project will focus on the renovation of Stara Vlaška and Jurja Branjuga Street, covering an area of 4,036 square meters. Planned changes include replacing asphalt with stone slabs, removing curbs, installing new drainage systems, and modernizing street lighting. These improvements aim to enhance the urban aesthetics and usability of the area, creating a more attractive environment for pedestrians and local businesses. The works are expected to start in June and last for three months, with an estimated project value of 2.7 million euros excluding VAT.

This long-awaited reconstruction signifies a crucial step in the revitalization of the urban space in Zagreb's historical areas. The adjustments aim not only to create a pedestrian-friendly environment but also to preserve the cultural heritage of Stara Vlaška, fostering a sense of place in a city that balances modern needs with its rich history. As such, the city's proactive approach may serve as a template for future urban redevelopment initiatives in similar areas across Croatia.
