Representative requests the opening of a CPI on Feminicide in Alesp

A state representative in São Paulo, Ediane Maria, has proposed the establishment of a Parliamentary Inquiry Commission to investigate the rise in feminicide cases in the state.

Ediane Maria, a state representative from PSOL in São Paulo, has formally requested the establishment of a Commission of Parliamentary Inquiry (CPI) in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly (Alesp) to investigate the alarming increase in feminicide cases within the state. This initiative highlights a growing concern regarding the safety and protection of women in light of rising violence against them. In her proposal, Ediane seeks to thoroughly evaluate the performance of various public entities, including law enforcement agencies, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the judiciary, focusing on their effectiveness in addressing feminicide and ensuring justice for victims.

The request outlines a comprehensive approach to understanding the systemic failures that contribute to the rise in these cases. Ediane Maria intends to investigate not only police practices and the judicial response but also the accessibility of protective measures and support systems for victims of domestic violence. The proposed inquiry aims to identify gaps in policies and services designed to protect women, with a view to making substantive recommendations for improvement.

As of the report's publication, 25 out of the 32 required signatures from fellow legislators have been secured to support the request for the CPI. Ediane has previously addressed related issues, having initiated a separate request for a CPI focused on police stations for women, reinforcing her commitment to confronting the challenges faced by victims of domestic violence and improving the state's response mechanisms. This inquiry underscores the critical need for systemic change in how gender-based violence is managed in Brazil, particularly in a state grappling with rising feminicide rates.
