Military operation hits illegal mining mafia economy
A military operation in Ecuador has significantly disrupted illegal mining activities by shutting down 25 mine entrances and seizing substantial equipment.
The Ecuadorian military has launched a successful operation that closed off 25 entrances to mines used for illegal mineral extraction. According to the Ministry of Defense, this military deployment has directly impacted the criminal economies in the country’s border region, resulting in a loss of approximately $100,000 for illegal mining mafias. The operation involved meticulous planning based on military intelligence and was coordinated with the National Intelligence Center.
Military personnel not only sealed off these illegal operations but also destroyed key infrastructure used by the criminal organizations. Among the confiscated materials were 200 sacks of gold-bearing material, multiple generators, air extractors, and essential mining equipment. Notably, a large quantity of explosives, which were likely utilized for illegal extraction activities, was also seized. This operation underscores the government's commitment to combatting organized crime in the mining sector.
By disrupting the operations of illegal mining mafias, the Ecuadorian military has not only alleviated some of the economic pressures they impose but also addressed broader environmental and safety concerns associated with unregulated mining activities. The successful execution of this operation sends a strong message about the government's resolve to restore legal order and protect the country’s natural resources from criminal exploitation.
