Family reports negligence after pregnant woman waits 4 days to deliver dead baby in maternity hospital in RR

A family has accused a maternity hospital in Brazil of negligence after a young woman had to wait four days to deliver her deceased baby from her womb.

A 26-year-old woman from Boa Vista, Brazil, has reported severe distress after her family claims she was left waiting for four days to have her deceased baby removed at the government-run Maternidade Nossa Senhora de Nazareth. The tragic circumstance arose after the woman, who was about five months pregnant with a son, experienced a stillbirth. Her family alleges negligence and delays in the medical response exacerbated their already traumatic experience.

When approached for comment by G1, the responsible health authority, the State Health Department (Sesau), asserted that the medical staff adhered to the protocols established by the Ministry of Health for such cases. They explained that in order to perform a curettage, which was deemed necessary due to the gestational period of 15 weeks, dilating the cervix was required before the procedure could take place. The health department maintained that they followed the prescribed medication course to induce dilation appropriately and that the fetus was expelled around midnight on the fourth day of waiting.

The incident raises significant concerns about patient care and protocol adherence in Brazilian maternity wards, particularly regarding how such sensitive situations are managed. The family's allegations of negligence highlight potential flaws within the healthcare system in Roraima and call for a closer examination of practices at the facility as well as the emotional toll this experience may have had on the grieving family, which emphasizes a need for compassion in the care provided during such vulnerable times.
