'Continuous rumbling': Huge quarry expansion green-lit despite local concerns
A quarry in Tasmania has received approval to significantly expand its production despite concerns from local residents over noise and traffic issues.
Tasmania's Walters Contracting has been given the go-ahead to expand operations at its Porters Bridge Road Quarry from an annual rock extraction of 32,000 cubic metres to 200,000 cubic metres. This increase will elevate production significantly, raising the output potential to approximately 360,000 tonnes annually. The decision follows a report from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), which indicated that the expansion could be managed responsibly, provided that certain conditions are adhered to.
Local residents have voiced significant concerns regarding the quarry's expansion, primarily focusing on potential noise pollution, dust emissions, and the increase in traffic that would result from the higher level of operations. These concerns have been met with considerable discussion about the impacts on the local community, which includes the quality of life and environmental conditions. The community’s worries highlight the tension between local development projects and the rights of residents to live in a quiet and peaceful environment.
Moving forward, the EPA will oversee the implementation of the quarry expansion, ensuring operations are carried out in a manner deemed environmentally acceptable. This oversight is crucial as the local residents plan to closely monitor the situation, hoping that the conditions set by the EPA will adequately address their concerns about environmental and health impacts stemming from the expanded quarry activities.
