UN warns of worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon due to war
The UN has raised alarms about a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon exacerbated by escalating military actions along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, has issued a stark warning about the precarious situation in Lebanon, underscoring the severe impact of ongoing military conflicts near the Israeli border. He pointed out that civilians are bearing the brunt of these increased hostilities, with daily Israeli strikes affecting UN peacekeeping operations in the region. Additionally, Fletcher highlighted that Israeli military checkpoints are obstructing international forces from accessing certain locations, further complicating the humanitarian response.
In his remarks made during a Security Council meeting addressing the Middle East conflict, Fletcher elaborated on the Lebanese Armed Forces' amendment of their deployment strategy, temporarily repositioning troops approximately 20 kilometers north of the Blue Line due to the intensifying military operations. He noted the regular attacks executed by Hezbollah across the Blue Line since early March, utilizing rockets and drones, which adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging environment.
Despite the mounting challenges, the UNIFIL forces remain on the ground and continue to fulfill their missions to the best of their ability given the volatile conditions. The situation necessitates urgent attention as the combination of military escalation and humanitarian needs in Lebanon raises grave concerns regarding the safety and well-being of its civilian population.
