Welfare reform has led to fewer homeless people in Copenhagen

A recent report indicates that a welfare reform in Denmark has surprisingly resulted in a decrease in homelessness in Copenhagen, contrary to earlier predictions of a surge.

The welfare reform initiated in Denmark, which came into effect in July of the previous year, was initially met with apprehension, particularly by social mayor Karina Vestergård Madsen of the Socialist Party. She expressed concerns that the reform would create a 'tsunami' of homelessness in the capital. However, newly released statistics from the City of Copenhagen, as reported by Politiken, indicate that the number of individuals evicted from their homes has actually decreased significantly in the past year, dropping from 127 to 92 between December 2024 and December 2025. This surprising data stands in stark contrast to previous fears surrounding the reform's impact.
