Monaco and Spanoulis part ways
Greek basketball coach Vassilis Spanoulis has officially left his position at Euroleague club Monaco following a less successful season compared to the previous one.
Vassilis Spanoulis, the Greek basketball coach, has officially parted ways with Euroleague club Monaco, having taken over as head coach in November 2024. His departure had been anticipated as he had not led the team for the last two matches, indicating underlying issues. In his first half-season with the club, Spanoulis enjoyed considerable success, leading Monaco to the Euroleague Final Four where they triumphed over Barcelona but fell to Fenerbahçe in the final.
However, the current season has not mirrored that success, with multiple challenges arising both on the court and regarding the coaching staff's financial situation. The team has suffered significant losses, including seven out of their last eight Euroleague matches, resulting in a record of 16 wins against 14 losses, placing them ninth currently, but the competition is tight. As the team approaches critical games in the main tournament, they are faced with a shrinking roster, having only ten players available for upcoming matches, which adds pressure to the situation.
Monaco’s struggles this season reflect broader issues within the team environment, including financial complications affecting player and staff salaries. With pivotal games ahead, including a home match against Olympiacos and an away game against A, the future of both the team and Spanoulis’s successor now hangs in the balance, as the club aims to regain its competitive edge in the Euroleague.
