Women in Khaki: The Army's Video for Voluntary Service

The Hellenic Army has launched a recruitment video inviting women aged 20 to 26 to voluntarily serve in the Army for a 12-month period, with application deadlines set for March 31, 2026.

Starting in 2026, women in Greece can voluntarily join the Hellenic Army for a year-long service. In line with this initiative, the Hellenic Army General Staff (ΓΕΣ) has released a video inviting eligible women to consider military service. The recruitment is particularly targeting women aged between 20 and 26, with all applications to be submitted by March 31, 2026, via the ΓΕΣ website. This progressive step marks a significant shift in gender inclusion within the armed forces of Greece.

According to statements made by Greece's Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, the pilot program aims to attract around 200 female volunteers for the year 2026. The selected candidates will undergo training at the Material Warfare Training Center in Lamia. This initiative could potentially reshape the role of women in the military, allowing them not only to contribute to national defense but also to experience various benefits associated with military service.

To incentivize participation, the program offers covenants including access to military hospitals, clubs, and other privileges of the Hellenic Armed Forces. Additionally, time served will be recognized as work experience and will add points to applications for the Special Forces recruitment process. Priority hiring will be given to women graduates seeking positions such as nurses or administrative personnel, providing further motivation for participation and the potential for a lasting impact on their careers afterward.
