Kingston councillor demands federal plan for permanent LaSalle Causeway

Pittsburgh District Coun. Ryan Boehme is advocating for a federal commitment to replace the temporary LaSalle Causeway with a permanent structure due to ongoing costs and traffic disruptions.

As the second anniversary of the temporary LaSalle Causeway approaches, Pittsburgh District Councillor Ryan Boehme is pressing the federal government for a definitive plan to create a permanent replacement for the bridge. He has initiated an online petition highlighting the unsustainable costs associated with the temporary bridge and the disruptions it causes. Councillor Boehme expressed concern that temporary solutions are at risk of becoming de facto permanent fixtures, hindering proper infrastructure development.

The temporary bridge currently in place is a modular structure that has to be lifted for large marine vessels to pass, resulting in significant operational costs. Each lifting operation incurs an expense of around $100,000, and with numerous planned and unplanned outages, this approach is estimated to cost the federal government about $3 million a year. The councillor points out that such disruptions are detrimental to local traffic and could lead to long-term economic repercussions.

Boehme's call to action aims to prompt meaningful engagement between local authorities and federal officials. With the current state of the LaSalle Causeway being a notable burden on both city resources and resident quality of life, he is urging for a forward-looking discussion that could lead to the development of a reliable and sustainable solution for Kingston's infrastructure needs.
