Texas to execute man who killed his girlfriend and her eight-year-old son in 2013

Cedric Ricks is scheduled for execution in Texas for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Roxann Sanchez and her son Anthony Figueroa, after the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal.

In North Texas, Cedric Ricks is set to be executed for the brutal stabbings of his girlfriend, Roxann Sanchez, and her eight-year-old son, Anthony Figueroa, which occurred nearly 13 years ago. The attack took place in May 2013 at their Bedford apartment, where Ricks inflicted fatal injuries, also leaving Sanchez’s 12-year-old son, Marcus, injured. Ricks, who is now 51 years old, has been on death row since his conviction and is due to receive lethal injection at 6 PM local time in Huntsville, Texas.

On the day of his execution, the US Supreme Court declined to review Ricks' final appeal, which sought to challenge his sentencing on the grounds of unconstitutional juror elimination based on race, among other claims of ineffective representation during trial. The court's brief order did not provide any insight into its rationale, leaving little room for Ricks to contest the execution despite his legal team's efforts to secure a stay. His case has drawn attention to issues of racial bias in the judicial process and the challenges faced by defendants in capital cases.

As Texas continues to uphold its status as one of the states with the highest rates of executions, Ricks’ case highlights both the specific circumstances surrounding his crime and broader conversations regarding capital punishment, race, and criminal justice reform. With the execution looming, advocates are raising concerns about the implications for future cases involving similar claims of racial discrimination in jury selection and the effectiveness of legal counsel in death penalty cases.
