MP investigates fire that destroyed more than 20 hectares of vegetation in the Pantanal of MS

The Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul is investigating a fire that burned over 20 hectares of native vegetation in a permanent preservation area in Brazil’s Pantanal region.

The Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS) has launched a civil inquiry to investigate a fire that consumed 20.04 hectares of native vegetation in a Permanent Preservation Area (APP) along the Miranda River, located within the Cristo Redentor Farm in the municipality of Miranda, part of the Pantanal region. The fire occurred between September 11 and 12, 2025, and was initially detected by the Pantanal in Alert Program, which uses satellite imagery and remote sensing to monitor heat sources within this sensitive ecosystem.

According to analyses conducted by the Geotechnologies Nucleus (Nugeo), the ignition point of the fire was traced to a specific area and the flames spread rapidly thereafter. Importantly, the affected region is entirely situated within the APP, which increases the severity of the environmental damage caused. The investigations aim to ascertain the exact causes of the fire and its implications for the local ecosystem and biodiversity.

Investigators have dismissed natural causes for the blaze after conducting a criminal forensic analysis, suggesting that the fire may have been caused by human activity, which necessitates further scrutiny. This incident underscores ongoing concerns about environmental protection in the Pantanal, one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems, and highlights the importance of enforcement actions against illegal activities that threaten its integrity.
