Trial of Golden Dawn: Eleni Zaroulia Sent to Prison

Eleni Zaroulia, the former MP of Golden Dawn and wife of Nikos Michaloliakos, has been sentenced to prison without the possibility of suspension, marking her first incarceration.

Eleni Zaroulia, who served as a Member of Parliament for the far-right political party Golden Dawn, is set to serve her prison sentence after a court denied her request for a suspension of the sentence. This ruling signifies a significant moment as it is Zaroulia's first time facing incarceration. Her ties to the party's leadership, particularly her relationship with Nikos Michaloliakos, add a layer of complexity to this case, as Golden Dawn has been the subject of scrutiny due to its extremist positions and actions.

In stark contrast, the court decided to grant a suspension for several other former parliamentary members of Golden Dawn, which included Chrysoavlantis Alexopoulos, Michalis Arvanitis, Aristodimos Daskalakis, Dimitris Koukoutsis, Stathis Boukouras, Antonis Gregos, and George Tzakanikas. However, they were subjected to a travel ban for three years. This inconsistency in sentencing may raise questions about the judicial process and the perceived severity of actions by different party members within the same legal framework.

Furthermore, the court reduced the sentences of other individuals associated with Golden Dawn, converting their penalties into monetary fines. This included a nominal fine of 5 euros per day for Nikos Michos, Markos Evgenikos, Thomas Maria, and Konstantinos Chatzidakis. This decision could be interpreted as a means of addressing the charges against them while avoiding harsher penal consequences, highlighting ongoing debates regarding accountability and justice related to far-right groups in Greece.
