More than 170 workers rescued in operation against analogous to slavery labor in PB

A significant operation in Brazil has rescued 175 workers found in conditions akin to slavery during a construction audit in João Pessoa and the surrounding area.

A recent operation by Brazil's Ministry of Labor and Employment has resulted in the rescue of 175 workers subjected to conditions akin to slavery in construction projects in João Pessoa and its metropolitan area. The operation, which began on February 25 and concluded on March 11, tracked down labor violations across ten construction sites, with rescues occurring in four high-profile projects, including luxury residential properties along the coast.

This operation is being hailed as one of the largest anti-slavery initiatives ever conducted in the state of Paraíba. It was executed by the Special Mobile Inspection Group of the Labor Auditors, who are part of the Ministry of Labor and Employment’s Inspection Secretariat. The scope and scale of the operation highlight the ongoing problem of forced labor in the Brazilian construction sector and showcase government efforts to combat this serious human rights violation.

In addition to rescues, the operation led to the recovery of approximately R$ 1 million in severance payments and workers' FGTS (the Severance Indemnity Fund). Employers found in violation of labor laws were mandated to rectify their employment relationships and settle outstanding wages, implicating a crucial move towards improving labor rights in Brazil, especially in industries notorious for exploitative practices.
