In Kaunas, increased air pollution recorded: urges caution for sensitive individuals
Air pollution levels in Kaunas reached 84.31 µg/m3, significantly higher than the acceptable limit, prompting warnings for sensitive groups.
On March 9th, air quality monitoring stations in Lithuania reported alarming levels of pollution, particularly in Kaunas where measurements indicated a dangerous 84.31 µg/m3 of particulate matter, well above the recommended threshold of 50 µg/m3. Additionally, pollution levels were noted in Vilnius's Žirmūnai district, with readings at 69.38 µg/m3, emphasizing a concerning trend in air quality across urban areas in Lithuania.
Experts attribute the increased pollution to various local factors including traffic emissions, particularly from transport routes in the affected areas, along with unfavorable meteorological conditions such as warm, windy, and dry weather. These conditions allow for the accumulation of pollutants in the air, exacerbating the existing issues and potentially impacting sensitive individuals such as children, elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
In light of these findings, the agency recommends that sensitive populations take precautions to minimize exposure to airborne pollutants, especially during peak pollution times. The situation calls for public awareness about the adverse effects of air quality deterioration and the need for immediate action to mitigate local pollution sources, ensuring a healthier environment for all residents in urban settings.
