Energy Prices: Relief Urgently Sought

German authorities are seeking solutions to the persistently high oil and gas prices, implementing new regulations for gas stations and releasing part of their oil reserves.

In light of ongoing high prices for oil and gas, governments worldwide are exploring relief measures. In Germany, the Cabinet reached an agreement on Wednesday regarding new regulations for gas station operators. Under the new rules, they will be allowed to raise fuel prices only once a day, but can lower them as often as they wish. Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche from the CDU stated that the new regulation should be implemented as soon as possible.

Additionally, Germany will release a portion of its strategic oil reserves at the request of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Specifically, Germany will release 2.64 million tons of oil, equivalent to 19.5 million barrels, which is nearly ten percent of its emergency reserve. This action is aimed at easing market pressures and contributing to overall energy price relief in the country.

The IEA, based in Paris, announced on Wednesday the release of a total of 400 million barrels of oil from the member states, marking the largest release in the agency's history. IEA Director Fatih Birol highlighted that all 32 member countries have unanimously agreed to this measure, reflecting a concerted effort to tackle the global energy crisis and stabilize the market during these challenging times.
