Mining poses risk of collapse and families leave homes in Poconé (MT)
Residents of Poconé, Brazil, are being evacuated due to the risk of building collapses caused by illegal mining activities beneath their houses.
Residents living on Avenida Francisco Guia de Souza, known as "Chico Gil" in Poconé, located 104 km from Cuiabá, are being forced to leave their homes due to the imminent risks of collapses linked to illegal mining activities underground. The situation has escalated to a point where local authorities deemed it necessary to take action to ensure the safety of the affected families. Major Jonas Eduardo de Queiroz has taken steps to address this by instituting a new emergency housing assistance program.
The newly enacted law, published in the Municipal Official Diary, establishes an emergency housing aid of R$ 900, aimed at supporting the displaced families. This financial assistance is set to initially benefit 12 families, as identified in a report by the Municipal Civil Defense. The report has also been submitted to the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso, which is investigating the ongoing situation. The initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also highlights the local government’s awareness of the implications tied to illegal mining and its impact on community safety.
Furthermore, the housing aid is designed to last for up to 12 months and could potentially be extended based on technical assessments showing that the need for support persists. Monthly payments are directed to the head of the identified families registered with the municipal Social Action, Employment and Income Secretariat, ensuring that the funds reach those most affected. This initiative reflects the community's urgent response to an environmental and safety crisis, and underscores broader issues related to illegal mining activities in the region that require ongoing oversight and intervention from government bodies.
