Ruckus over council elections in Meghalaya, mobile internet banned in 5 districts of Garo Hills
Amid rising tensions over tribal council elections in Meghalaya, mobile internet services have been suspended in five districts of the Garo Hills region to prevent the spread of rumors.
In Meghalaya, as tensions escalate surrounding the tribal council elections, the state government has imposed a ban on mobile internet services across five districts in the Garo Hills area. This decision comes after concerns that social media could facilitate the spread of rumors, which could further disrupt law and order in the region. Authorities have also reported incidents of violence, arson, and clashes earlier, prompting additional measures to ensure public safety.
According to Principal Secretary (Home) F.R. Kharkongor, the suspension of mobile internet services is a preventative action taken in light of several incidents of election-related violence. He indicated that the authorities are aware of the potential for disturbances to public order and the risk of peace being breached. Therefore, the immediate enforcement of this order aims to mitigate any escalation of unrest in the affected districts.
The ban on mobile internet services specifically affects the West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, and South West Garo Hills districts. The decision to implement these restrictions was made based on reports from the police headquarters and various deputy commissioners warning of possible violent occurrences across different areas in the Garo Hills. Such action underscores the ongoing challenges related to maintaining peace and order during the sensitive period of the elections.
