A courier suspected of fraud was detained in Narva, police are looking for possible victims
Police in Narva have arrested a 17-year-old courier linked to a fraud scheme targeting elderly citizens.
Last week, police in Narva, Estonia, arrested a 17-year-old boy who is suspected of participating in a fraudulent scheme as a courier. The police are urging anyone who has suffered losses due to the individual depicted in a photo to contact them. The case was initiated when the police received a call from a grandchild, who reported that their 88-year-old grandfather had received a phone call from someone posing as an electricity meter inspector.
According to initial information, the elderly man was convinced during the conversation to hand over cash to a person who would be coming to his home. Following the instructions, he had already given approximately 15,000 euros to the scammers. The grandchild additionally informed the authorities that the scammers were once again attempting to extract money from the grandfather. Responding quickly to this information, the Narva police, along with rapid responders, detained the 17-year-old Ukrainian boy at the scene of another attempted scam while he was acting as a courier for the fraud operation.
The Viru County Court has already taken the matter up, indicating the seriousness of the situation. This incident sheds light on the ongoing issue of scams targeting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, and highlights the need for greater awareness and prevention measures to protect them from such fraudulent activities.
