Hungarians who arrived in Ukraine to inspect Druzhba pipeline have no official status – Foreign Ministry

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry clarified that a Hungarian group's entry to inspect the Druzhba pipeline lacks official status despite their planned talks on restoring operations.

On March 11, a Hungarian group, led by State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy GΓ‘bor Czepek, entered Ukraine with the intention of inspecting the Druzhba oil pipeline and discussing its restoration. However, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that the group does not possess any official status nor have any scheduled meetings with Ukrainian officials. This differentiates their visit from an official diplomatic mission and raises questions about their true purpose.

Tykhyi emphasized that the members of the Hungarian group utilized the standard visa-free entry available to citizens of Schengen countries, which allows them to visit Ukraine for tourism and other non-official purposes. This reiteration from the Foreign Ministry aims to clarify that while the visit is recognized, it does not carry official responsibilities or authority to negotiate on behalf of Hungary regarding the pipeline's operational state.

The Druzhba pipeline is significant as it transports oil from Russia to Europe, and any discussions about its condition have potential implications for regional energy security and bilateral relations between Hungary and Ukraine. Nevertheless, the lack of official status for the Hungarian group underscores the complexities of diplomatic engagements in a sensitive geopolitical context.
